Last August, Amazon.com paid $970 million to acquire Twitch.tv. Few people, it seems, outside of those who play the stock market or the gaming communities are familiar with Twitch.tv—a live video gaming site that has attracted over 100 million viewers monthly. It’s a staggering statistic. To put it in perspective, the Oscars had around 43 million viewers this year.
Viewership is cyclical, so at any given time, a game like League of Legends, one of the most popular games on the site, can range anywhere from 200,000 viewers to over a five million.
Twitch has created a subculture of gamers. The demographics and the popularity of this semi subtle mass of people behind Twitch is fascinating and I can't wait for TwitchCon this September!
